What is pedrera...?

La Pedrera is the unoffical name of Casa Milà, one of Antoni Gaudi’s architectural works in Barcelona.

This modernist-styled apartment building was built between 1906 and 1910 and is a great example of artistic & engineering creativity coming together to build something that hadn’t existed this way before.

I visited in 2006 and was struck by the organic feel of the building, like it was all one creature, with its lack of straight lines.

Afterwards, when I was looking for a symbol to represent my own artistic endevours (film-making, at the time), I was drawn to the espanta bruixes (witch scarers), the ornate chimneys on the rooftop.

Interesting facts about La Pedrera…

  • La Pedrera means the quarry in local Catalan.
  • It was Antoni Gaudi’s final work.
  • There’s a distinct lack of straight lines - inside or outside of the building
  • He sacked himself from the job because the family did not allow him to build the enormous statue to Mary he had planned.
